摘要: The wave climate of the Hellenic Seas and particularly extremes are investigated by means a 42-year (1960–2001) model hindcast. model, implemented over Mediterranean basin, is forced high-resolution winds generated upon downscaling ERA40 reanalysis. It shown that quality hindcast overall satisfactory; however, extreme heights in Aegean Sea consistently overestimated. Accordingly, corrections to original data applied. results show highest mean conditions located east west Crete Island where northerly air flow exits Sea. Extreme waves outside Sea, mainly southern Ionian south Crete. Nevertheless, high also develop around N-NE Cyclades islands. Despite milder due short fetch distances, height range very similar Moreover, summer, two seas exhibit with found Levantine basin. Storms longer duration observed analysis long-term trends shows as well average intensity events have decreased Seas. this decrease has not been monotonic. A turning point year 1981 mostly increasing before decreasing afterwards.
