Career Satisfaction of Women in Surgery: Perceptions, Factors, and Strategies

摘要: Background With the current and projected shortages of general surgeons, more attention is being paid to increasing pool women physicians. This study seeks understand variables leading career satisfaction for surgeons better recruit, retain, support them. Study Design Eighteen semi-structured interviews 12 female 6 male 2 years into practice were qualitatively analyzed converted coded, categorized data. Significance was derived by Fisher's exact test. Participants recruited snowball sampling. Results Our sample represents a highly satisfied group surgeons. Although both men describe with equal frequency having made tradeoffs personal family time, vice versa, far frequently than cite reasons related their predictable relationships as why they are currently (34.1% versus 8.7%; p Conclusions make career, women's perception comes from viewing surgical within broader context lives. Women might be attracted that acknowledges values whole person beyond surgeon, could benefit work infrastructures enhance networking.
