摘要: We used controlled aviary experiments to study the role of male ornaments in male-male competition and female choice common yellowthroat Geothlypis trichas, a sexually dichromatic warbler. Previous studies Wisconsin, USA, indicated that males with larger black facial masks were dominant over smaller preferred by females mate experiments. In this study, we replicated those population New York, where mating success was related more consistently size yellow bib (throat, breast, belly) than mask. Similar found likely be however, bibs there no significant preference for masks. These results are consistent hypothesis carotenoid-based selected melanin-based competition. However, pattern appears vary between York Wisconsin. This geographic difference could variety environmental factors (habitat, carotenoid parasite abundance) affect costs benefits choosing particular each location.
