摘要: Accounts of primate social dominance hierarchies often imply that the achievement superior status is a "goal", akin to valued resource or commodity, and emerge in multimale groups from prolonged competitive conflicts over status. This possibility not consistent with our observations five newly formed triads adult male squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). Stable linear based on clear asymmetries direction intermale agonism genital displays were established quickly, virtually no reciprocal fighting, absence rank-related differences plasma cortisol testosterone. Although affiliative overtures initiated more by high-ranking middle-ranking males, directed equally toward all members each group. From outset study regardless rank, spent an average 33% their time huddling contact cagemates. These results suggest monkeys, reflect expedient convention reduces conflict facilitates formation small cohesive groups. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
