摘要: The nature of the bivalve filter-pump was further elucidated in n~ussel Mytilus edulis by investigating effects temperature on pump and system characteristics. Pumping rates increased with temperature, linearly correlated temperature-determined decrease viscosity water. variation pumping rate thus corresponded to varying viscous resistance water flow canal mussel-pump. increase beat frequency lateral cilia therefore had no clear effect rate. Also, spawning stimulation without rates. In back pressure-flow characteristic fully open, active mussels, pressure at zero (AH;) independent temperature. Predictions based modelled as a leaky, viscous, constant-force were good agreement measured estimated parameters, supporting concept suspension-feeding bivalves filter-pumps that process ambient autonomously is, absence physiological mechanisms for regulating pumping.
