摘要: Previous research has shown that bilingual speakers have higher levels of cognitive control than comparable monolinguals, especially at older ages. The present study investigates a possible neural correlate this behavioral effect. Given white matter (WM) integrity decreases with age in adulthood, we tested the hypothesis bilingualism is associated maintenance WM people. Using diffusion tensor imaging, found people who were lifelong bilinguals monolinguals. This maintained was measured by fractional anisotropy (FA) and corpus callosum extending to superior inferior longitudinal fasciculi. We also hypothesized stronger connections would be more widely distributed patterns functional connectivity bilinguals. assessing resting-state frontal lobe regions adjacent areas group differences FA. Bilinguals showed anterior posterior compared These results are first evidence related naturally occurring experience; resulting enhanced structural may provide basis for "brain reserve."
