摘要: We investigated the relationship between growth rate and cellular manganese concentrations for an estuarine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana (clone 3H) a related oceanic species Thassiosira oceanica 13-1). Both were exposed to matrix of low cupric ion activities using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-trace metal buffered seawater media. The Mn-limited cultures was concentration Mn, which in turn directly activity d inversely activity. interaction controlling could be explained quantitatively by competitive binding models copper competitively blocked either uptake or within intracellular pools. Clone 13-1, isolated from Mn-poor Sargasso seawater, able grow more rapidly at than clone 3I-I, eutrophic estuary, provided that remained below ca. 10-l’ mol *liter-‘. Adaptation 13-1 Mn appeared involve two mechanisms: greater ability lower requirement (i.e. cell quota) growth. Comparison our data with estimates marine waters suggests deficiency important phytoplankton community composition some waters.
