摘要: Female sex hormones influence the neural control of breathing and may impact neurologic recovery from spinal cord injury. We hypothesized that respiratory after C2 hemisection (C2HS) differs between males females is blunted by prior ovariectomy (OVX) in females. Inspiratory tidal volume (VT), frequency (fR), ventilation (VE) were quantified during quiet (baseline) 7% CO2 challenge before C2HS unanesthetized adult rats via plethysmography. Baseline was similarly altered all (reduced VT, elevated fR) but hypercapnia had relatively higher VT (i.e. compared to pre-injury) than male or OVX (p < 0.05). Phrenic neurograms recorded anesthetized indicated normalized burst amplitude ipsilateral crossed phrenic phenomenon) greater 0.05 vs. OVX). conclude differences output are present at 2 weeks post-C2HS. These consistent with hypothesis ovarian cervical
