Sickle cell anaemia: is it a cause for secondary osteoporosis?

摘要: Objective The risk of osteoporosis and osteopenia i s patients with sickle cell anaemia is not well established. This prospective study was conducted to assess the prevalence in anaemia. Methods Consecutive adult who were treated at department orthopaedic surgery King Fahd University Hospital, AIKhobar, SaudiArabia, between April July 2006, subjects study. After a verbal consent participate study, age sex documented body mass index (BMI) calculated. Blood extracted for haematological biochemistry which also included haemoglobin electrophoresis. Bone mineral density (BMD) measurement done using dual energy x-rayabsorbtiometry (DEXA) lumbar spine upper femur. Osteopenia diagnosed as per WHO criteria. Results results 36 analyzed. There 23 males 13 females. average 34.21+/-6.35 years, females 35.38+/-5.40 years. Eighty-two percent 76% either osteopenic or osteoporotic. highest (P= 0.001). Conclusions finds quite high among Saudi SCA patients. Physicians should be aware every effort made treat them adequately prevent related fractures.
