摘要: Fundamental core-mode `cutoff is a useful concept for tapered `single-mode? lightguides with either finite cladding surrounded by lower-index external medium (= `second cladding?) or, equivalently, raised inner cladding. This cutoff not acutely sensitive to the index reasonable cladding/core diameter ratios. The dependence on core grading given via universal step curves and simple moment formulas both planar guides fibres. Arbitrary profiles can be treated; generalisation higher-order modes given, polarisation effects may included.
