摘要: Abstract Although many large mammals currently face significant threats that could lead to their extinction, resources for conservation are often scarce, resulting in the need develop efficient plans prioritize actions. We combined several methods spatial ecology identify distribution of endangered Baird's tapir across its range from southern Mexico northern Colombia. Twenty-eight habitat patches covering 23% study area were identified, harboring potentially 62% or more total population this flagship species. Roughly half is under some form protection, while most remaining (~70%) occurs indigenous/local communities. The network with maximum connectivity created these contains at least one complete break (in between Selva El Ocote and Lacandona) even when considering generous dispersal scenario. analysis also highlighted a probable Panama Canal high fragmentation Honduras. In light findings, we recommend following actions facilitate tapir: 1) protect existing by strengthening enforcement areas already 2) work indigenous territories preserve enforce land rights, help local communities maintain traditional practices; 3) re-establish connections will allow species' distribution; 4) conduct additional noninvasive surveys little no species data; 5) collect telemetry genetic data on estimate home size, capabilities, meta-population structure.
