From the shop floor: microenterprise development in a Bolivian city

摘要: This article offers a picture of small-scale manufacturing in the Bolivian city Sucre from perspectives owner-managers five small carpentry businesses. Its goal is to address some basic questions about business-development process for microentrepreneurs poor local economies: what motivates these business owners, obstacles do they identify growth, and roles microenterprise development organizations play assisting them overcome stimulate economic development? Over 15-month study period, businesses (which are typical many Sucre) demonstrated incremental growth or redirection their energies into other ventures. They had practically no relationship with service providers offering "grow microenterprises," nor artisans' associations, only limited relationships lenders. Ultimately, little influence upon this key industry sector. The view shop floor explains why: pursued outcomes while often failing take account wider social geographic contexts which such happen.
