摘要: Abstract Small amounts of free gas in interstitial sediment pores are known to significantly lower compressional (P-) wave velocity (Vp). This effect, combined with moderately elevated Vp from the presence hydrates, is usually thought be cause for often observed strong negative reflection coefficients bottom simulating reflections (BSRs) at base hydrate stability (BGHS). At several locations however, weak BSRs have been observed, which difficult reconcile a pores. We here present rock physics model on Hikurangi Margin east New Zealand. Thin sections fine-grained mudstone sample submarine outcrop vicinity BSR show macroscopic porosity form fractures and intrafossil macropores. apply Kuster-Toksoz theory predict seismic velocities water-saturated micropores or hydrates pore space compliant match field observations coefficient of −0.016 two end-member models; (1) rocks hydrate-filled voids concentration
