摘要: Abstract : A weakness of traditional methods seismic event location is their susceptibility to errors in picking arrival times regional phases such as Pn, Pg, and teleseismic phases. We evaluate the practical utility waveform cross-correlation a way reduce or remove pick error, applied large datasets seismically active regions East Asia, for purposes obtaining significant improvements location. Key ideas this project emerged during 2000-2003 from work Lamont-led consortium calibrate stations Asia. Thus, we found number that one best ground truth events was use cross-correlations enabled excellent (sub-kilometer) precision relative locations. Additional (often, non-seismic) information then allowed absolute locations be estimated. preliminary study China has shown 1300 out 14,000 earthquakes (approximately 9%) exhibit high with at least other earthquake, on basis have 494 sets cross correlated multiplets, ranging doublets multiplet 26 events. apply correlations problem four areas, namely China, parts Eastern Canada, Central United States (New Madrid), (for validation our overall method) California. For each area, carry three steps data acquisition (digital waveforms, phase picks, catalog information), (exploring effects different filters, spatial separation, differences magnitude), (double-difference). produce measurements differences, precise
