摘要: The physiological basis for pigment synthesis in lepidopteran wing scales is well-studied, although less known about the reasons why individuals of same species vary pigmentation. Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus L.) show subtle variations shade orange on their wings and this to predict flight ability mating success. present study tests possibility that associated with amount residual energy reserves carried over from larval stage. Using monarchs reared captivity under identical conditions (n = 207), residuals a regression size mass at eclosion, which indicate reserves, are obtained. This measure positively related adult longevity without feeding, indicating importance reserve monarchs, as well value investigation. (i.e. hue) determined scanned using image analysis. Importantly, hue predicted significantly by eclosion (individuals more redder). linkage between these traits may explain previous findings whereby redder fly further mate because both behaviours would be enhanced greater stores. add growing body work showing how intraspecific variation pigmentation has biological significance possibly other butterflies. Although much remains investigated regarding underpinnings variation, results future efforts should rewarding.
