摘要: Abstract Whale entanglement in fishing gear is a global problem, and underwater ropes associated with this are often the cause of injuries that can lead to fatalities. Minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) especially at risk because they relatively small, widely distributed, occur coastal habitats where many types deployed. It unknown whether minke detect avoid gear. To address question we conducted series field experiments measure behavioral responses nearshore simulating crab whelk We also investigated correlations between whale behaviors specific environmental variables. Our methods involved both visual acoustic monitoring near experimental buoys different colors. A remote sensing system was used simultaneously monitor oceanographic conditions, record sounds, capture video swimming ropes. (N = 42) decreased their velocity altered bearing when passing ropes, during trials white black Some minkes (N = 7) trajectories appeared produce low-frequency vocalizations. Collectively information provides strong evidence react behaviorally presence simulate areas. hypothesize perhaps passive sensory abilities may be mechanisms behind these rope avoidance behaviors. recommend high contrast (white black) areas help minimize entanglements other species.
