Public Awareness about Diabetes: Cross Sectional Study of Lithuania's Residents

摘要: Background: Type 2 diabetes is a growing health problem globally; however, awareness about remains low. Aim: To assess the public perception of - how much does know it? What are beliefs this challenging issue? Methods: A opinion survey was performed in April 2012. Interviews with random sample 1,002 residents Lithuania aged 16-74 were conducted households respondents. This took into account age, sex, education, employment, family status, and size residential location. The topics covered by 15-item questionnaire used for these interviews concerned perceived severity different conditions respondents' knowledge risk factors normal glycemic indicators as well their perceptions related to insulin. Results: More than half (56.3%) respondents had previously undergone control test, 33.8% study participants familiar parameters glycemia. Diabetes ranked fourth among 13 problems (the top three attributed malignancies, AIDS mental illnesses). highest score all developing obesity; obesity never mentioned associating participants. people revealed marginally medicalized images condition. Conclusions: Study findings suggest potential social stigmatization encourage looking new ways approaching community individual diabetic patients regard issue diabetes.
