摘要: : Life history characteristics of many herbaceous understory plants suggest that such species recover slowly from major perturbations as clear cutting. We examined cover and richness in the understories nine primary (“old-growth”) forests southern Appalachian Mountains comparable secondary forests, ranging age 45 to 87 years since Neither nor increased with forests. This suggests three possibilities: (1) recovery is so slow or variable among sites insufficient time detect it; (2) will never match remnant because climatic conditions are different today than when became established; (3) colonize pit mound microtopography caused by death trees, must await growth, death, decomposition trees forest. Whatever mechanism, communities mixed-mesophytic Appalachians appear unlikely within present planned logging cycles 40–150 years, suggesting a future loss diversity plants.
