Deceleration of the solar wind upstream from the Earth's bow shock and the origin of diffuse upstream ions

摘要: Observations with the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory/Max-Planck-Institut crossed-fan solar wind ion experiment on ISEE 1 reveal that is decelerated and deflected away from direction of earth's bow shock as it enters portion upstream region populated by 'diffuse' ions long-period (10--60 s) waves. Typically, average directed velocity vector changes 7--10 km s/sup -1/ wave region. At times, speed large 25--40 are observed. Superposed upon these in flow amplitude (approx. +- 15 -1/) fluctuations associated waves themselves. The observations suggest deceleration result momentum transfer 'reflected' to via reflected beams go unstable. broad angular distributions diffuse thus appear be produced a consequence disruption beams.
