摘要: Development projects in tropical forests can impact biodiversity. Assessment and monitoring programs based on the principles of adaptive management assist managers to identify reduce such impacts. The small mammal community is one important component a forest ecosystem that may be impacted by development projects. In 1996, natural gas exploration project was initiated Peruvian rainforest. Smithsonian Institution's Monitoring Biodiversity program cooperated with Shell Prospecting Peru establish an protect region's this article, we discuss role assessing mammals relation project. We outline conceptual issues involved establishing assessment program, including setting objectives, evaluating results making appropriate decisions. also summarize steps taken implement assessment, provide from protocols species for monitoring.
