摘要: Abstract In a recent study of the mesotidal Ria Formosa, coastal lagoon in southern Portugal, water temperature channels ranged from 12 °C winter to 27 °C summer and salinity 13 36.5, although much higher values were observed saltpans. Conditions Formosa not homogeneous despite large tidal exchange water; inner brackish but hypersaline summer. Water areas had significantly different characteristics compared inflowing water, both Areas with these differences detectable at low high neaps. Deterioration quality is therefore more probable areas. The waters went through complex heating cooling cycle diurnal difference ∼6 °C 2 salinity, respectively. lack freshwater input insolation meant outflowing was saline that waters. summer, controlled density least dense also being most saline, whereas major controlling parameter. effects inputs localised vicinity Gilao River. No evidence found persistent or widespread stratification so this shallow appears be vertically well mixed. Vertical mixing does allow dense, stagnant, bottom layer form would aggravate deterioration quality. net effect processes parcel moves minimal dilution potentially receiving waste discharges.
