摘要: Despite potential links between logging-induced changes in abiotic factors, variation plant secondary chemistry, and foliage consumption by herbivores, few studies have investigated the impacts of timber extraction on anti-herbivore metabolites. To determine if uneven-aged (UAM, i.e., selective logging) even-aged (EAM, clear-cutting) management regimes impacted levels foliar phenolics Quercus alba Q. velutina (white black oak, respectively), we quantified condensed tannins (CT) total leaves canopy understory trees located within landscapes undergoing UAM, EAM, or no harvest (NHM) southeastern Missouri Ozarks. In understory, were slightly elevated UAM relative to NHM EAM sites but lower sites. Furthermore, treatment effects phenolic concentrations greater older forests. canopy, treatments altered chemistry only for block 2, where CT alba, reduced velutina. Understory both species had higher when growing slopes with southand west-facing aspects than those north- east-facing aspects. Our results indicate that harvests, even at low (10% biomass removal), polyphenolics logging dependent blocking factors (forest age previous history). addition, defoliation generally (e.g. south- slopes). combination additional oak as well herbivores growth, our due forest practices may large consequences Ozark communities. # 2004 Elsevier B.V.
