摘要: The use of science in protecting the functions wetland ecosystems has been viewed as a success story. We looked for evidence that scientific efforts affected two important actions: (1) National Wildlife Refuge System was expanded substantially 1930s, including many wetlands, (2) legislation 1972 protected “waters United States” from dredging and filling. first action catalyzed by droughts catastrophic declines waterfowl populations during 1930s. A few key scientists were positioned to acquire protect making choices based on opinions about populations. In 1960s, ecosystem played stronger role, with research freshwater wetlands revealing water quality improvement functions, studies tidal marshes linking coastal fisheries high productivity salt marshes. Wetland protection followed strong statements made these links, even though base limited. methods which influenced policy are obscure, because record such activities. provide case how ecologists have translated into management action.
