摘要: PURPOSE. To measure the total amount of rhodopsin in human eyes across life span and to test hypothesis that content infants' elderly's is lower than at other ages. METHODS. Rhodopsin was extracted from retinal pigment epithelial fractions 196 102 donors, ages 27 weeks' gestation through 94 years, using quantitative procedures. recover photopigment bleached by unavoidable light exposure, 78 were incubated with 9-cis retinal. The (retinal plus fractions) per eye examined for significant changes age, higher value pairs eyes. RESULTS. median adults 6.45 nmoles (range, 3.33-10.84 nmoles) 8 or more recovered 28% all adult (<12 months postterm) significantly older individuals increases age. After infancy, no change age found. For both infants adults, without reducing variance recovered. estimated be 50% early approximately 5 weeks postterm (95% confidence interval, 0-10 postterm). CONCLUSIONS. A developmental increase occurs during infancy. Thereafter remains constant. quite variable. Bleaching alone cannot explain variability.
