摘要: Ants are known for the important roles they play in processes contributing to ecosystem functioning many habitats. However, pollutants can impact services provided by ants. The Argentine ant, an invasive species North America, was investigated potential selenium (Se) may have on ants residing within a contaminated habitat. Mortality tests were conducted using worker fed artificial nectar source containing 1-of-4 environmentally common Se compounds (forms): seleno-l-methionine, methylselenocysteine, selenate or selenite. Accumulation of ant bodies at end two weeks quantified with use hydride generation atomic absorption spectroscopy. Lastly, we choice dyes determine whether might avoid carbohydrate diet providing them between sucrose without Se. Choice also tested responses when different background concentrations. results this study indicated that form and quantity Se, as well time exposure, mortality workers. Methylselenocysteine found be most toxic among 4 chemical forms presented solutions, whereas seleno-l-methionine selenite caused greater body burdens. Furthermore, showed did not prefer control solution treated regardless concentration. These findings serve first look into possible detrimental impacts these contaminants pose frequent sugary sources.
