摘要: Background Literacy is a national and international problem. Studies have shown the readability of adult pediatric patient education materials to be too high for average adults. Materials should written at 8th-grade level or lower. Objective To determine general designed adults on World Wide Web (WWW). Methods GeneralPediatrics.com (http://www.generalpediatrics.com) digital library serving medical information needs health care providers, patients, families. Documents from 100 different authoritative sites laypersons were evaluated using built-in computer software formula (Flesch Reading Ease Flesch-Kincaid reading levels) hand calculation methods (Fry Formula SMOG methods). Analysis variance pairedttests determined significance. Results Eighty-nine documents constituted final sample; they covered wide spectrum topics. The overall Flesch score was 57.0. mean Fry 12.0 (12th grade, 0 months schooling) 12.2. grade significantly lower (P Conclusions Pediatric WWW are not an appropriate adult. We propose that practical how it included all guidance in material selection. discuss suggestions improved materials.
