Trends and missing parts in the study of movement ecology

摘要: Movement is important to all organisms, and accordingly it addressed in a huge number of papers the literature. Of nearly 26,000 referring movement, an estimated 34% focused on movement by measuring or testing hypotheses about it. This enormous amount information difficult review highlights need assess collective completeness studies identify gaps. We surveyed 1,000 randomly selected from 496 journals compared facets studied with suggested framework for ecology, consisting internal state (motivation, physiology), motion navigation capacities, external factors (both physical environment living organisms), links among these components. Most simply measured described organisms without reference ecological factors, most frequently part was link between capacity. Few looked at effects capacity, state, those were mainly vertebrates. For invertebrates plants population level, whereas more vertebrate conducted individual level. Consideration only population-level averages promulgates neglect between-individual variation potentially hindering study controlling movement. Terminology found be inconsistent taxa subdisciplines. The gaps identified coverage highlight research areas that should fully understand ecology
