Using the recently installed Gemini Planet Imager (GPI), we have obtained first H-band spectrum of planetary companion to nearby young star β Pictoris. GPI is designed image and provide low-resolution spectra Jupiter-sized, self-luminous companions around stars. These observations were taken covering H band (1.65 μm). has a resolving power ∼45 demonstrates distinctive triangular shape cool substellar object with low surface gravity. atmospheric models, find an effective temperature 1600-1700K gravity log(g) = 3.5-4.5 (cgs units). values agree well "hot-start" predictions from evolution models for gas giant mass between 10 12 MJup age 20 Myr.
