摘要: SENSORY MODULATION DISORDER AND SCHIZOPHRENIA: LINKING BEHAVIORAL MEASURES Linda M. Olson, Ph.D. A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for degree Doctor Philosophy at Virginia Commonwealth University University, 2011 Major Director: Dianne F. Simons, Ph.D., OTR/L, Assistant Professor, Occupational Therapy Schizophrenia is a devastating disorder affecting millions people United States. Studies leading to new understanding and intervention this are essential, as current interventions minimally effective. The end result high rates re-hospitalization, impaired occupational performance decreased community reintegration. According Diagnostic Statistical Manual Mental Disorders, symptoms schizophrenia categorized positive or negative, with both types impacting successful engagement. Based on behavioral observations therapists have hypothesized that population may also experience sensory modulation (SMD). Although electrophysiological studies support presence SMD, focusing relationship between observable behaviors these two disorders lacking. purpose project examine SMD schizophrenia. cross-sectional design was used study. convenience sample 40 subjects recruited from outpatient psychiatric programs Chicago, Illinois. Multi-site testing using Positive Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile (A/ASP) address following questions: 1) Is there patterns SMD? 2) Can negative reliably predict disorder? Spearman correlation coefficient indicated significant low registration sensitivity quadrants A/ASP. Furthermore, Mann Whitney U test uncovered significantly higher scores African Americans compared Caucasians. No relationships were found SMD. Stepwise regression predicted combination symptoms, race gender best predictors scores. This study did find suggesting actually be psychosis not However, due small size, results should interpreted cautiously further completed.
