The infant resuscitated, placed in respirator, treated energetically but with limited response, expired 15 days later. At autopsy, bilaterally symmetric lesions were walls third ventricle, periaqueductal gray matter floor fourth characterized marked destruction most neural elements, selective preservation neurons their processes. process is interpreted as that subacute necrotizing encephalomyelopathy. Many preserved had reacted multiplication nuclei, many 11 being present single cell. Binucleated macrophages also present. There hypoxic changes well, loss hippocampal gyrus, basophilic PAS positive granules cytoplasm neurons, some containing iron. If resuscitation failed this would been considered “crib death”. possibility exists other cases crib death may be nature.
