Optimal control theory is applied to a batch polymerization reactor for PMMA calculate the near-optimal temperature and initiator policies that are required produce polymer with desired final conversion, number average weight molecular weights. The two-point boundary value problem results from application of Pontryagin minimum principle mathematical model solved by discretization method. According this, total reaction time divided into N equal subintervals. It assumed variables remain constant in each interval Hamiltonian minimized first-order gradient technique. shown introduction “target set” concept, which well suited industrial practice, simplifies numerical solution TPBV problem. Results simulations demonstrate potential gains possible optimal PMMA.
