摘要: Abstract The relationship between capillary density and mitochondrial volume has been investigated for the slow trunk muscle of haemoglobinless ‘Icefish’, Chaenocephalus aceratus Lonnberg. In general, teleost muscles densities, NA(c,f), are positively correlated with mitichondrial Vv(mit,f). However, Icefish is low (544 ± 24 capillaries/mm 2 ) when compared teleosts similar densities (0.34 0.01). For example, fibres in Saithe ( Pollachius virens Vv(mit,f) 0.35 0.02 but 4507 . Estimates surface (198 0.035 cm −1 , respectively) range reported literature other species. Thus, C. NA(c,f) provides a relatively poor index functional properties peripheral exchange vessels. Mean cross-sectional area (64 7 μ m was two to three times greater than that found most resistance Icefish, therefore result presence large bore capillaries, resulting high flow rates also allowing maintenance favourably hgih - tissue P O gradients.
