摘要: Abstract Hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas production can generate large volumes of highly saline produced waters that pose a significant disposal challenge potential opportunity reuse. Here, we report on microbial fuel cell (MFC) fed with water (Barnett Shale), which power (47 mW/m2) accomplished COD removal efficiency 68% (influent 10,520 ± 1340 mg/L). Bacterial population analysis showed two autochthonous halophilic species colonizing the anode, H. praevalens M. hydrocarbonoclasticus. In addition, demonstrated hypersaline MFCs (100 g/L NaCl) produce electricity to capacitive deionization (CDI) device desalination, salt adsorption capacity up 40 mg per g carbon electrode. This is first MFC operating water, illustrates couple CDI enable desalination reuse wastewaters.
