Effect of telephone contact on further suicide attempts in patients discharged from an emergency department: randomised controlled study

摘要: Objective To determine the effects over one year of contacting patients by telephone month or three months after being discharged from an emergency department for deliberate self poisoning compared with usual treatment. Design Multicentre, randomised controlled trial. Setting 13 departments in north France. Participants 605 people attempted suicide poisoning. Intervention The intervention consisted at discharge to evaluate success recommended treatment adjust treatment. Control received as usual, most cases referral back their general practitioner. Main outcome measures primary were proportion participants who reattempted suicide, number deaths and losses follow-up months' follow-up. Secondary types contacts health care. Results On intention treat basis, groups did not differ significantly further attempts, follow-up: contact (intervention 23% (34/147) v controls 30% (93/312), difference 7%, 95% confidence interval - 2% 15%), (25% (36/146) 30%, 5%, 4% 14%). Participants contacted less likely report having (12% 22% control group, 10%, 18%). Conclusion Contacting may help reduce suicides year.
