摘要: To determine whether glaucoma selectively injures a particular size of optic nerve fiber (and its cell body), we induced chronic experimental in one eye each ten monkeys. With automated image analysis, the number and diameter fibers were compared between glaucomatous normal fellow eye. Fibers larger than mean atrophied more rapidly eyes, though no was spared from damage. The for eyes 0.74 micron, significantly lower 0.85 micron (P less 0.005). There preferentially greater atrophy all sizes superior inferior peripheral sectors, as seen human with glaucoma. rapid appeared to result two causes. areas that suffer most loss normally contain high proportion fibers. Furthermore, lost even mild damage, indicating their inherent susceptibility injury by tendency large be has implications future improvements testing early
