摘要: Abstract : Reconciliation of structures shown in global models Earth structure with those detailed, high-resolution regional has become one the most important tasks seismic tomography. Recent studies have that combination phases teleseismic can greatly increase location accuracy; however, for this to be case, velocity well resolved on a fine scale. The efficient method accomplish task is development multi-resolution using local (but smooth) basis functions resolution from regions sparse data coverage dense coverage. This paper reports recent results an ongoing project designed bridge gap between and tomography achieve correspondingly incremental improvements event location. We previously developed moderately model (equivalent spherical harmonic degree 18) spline functions. improves locations over other more finely parameterized ( Antolik et al., 2001). Here we extend same techniques simultaneous detailed inclusion within model. describe progress constructing new Africa/Mediterranean region which makes use surface wave dispersion data, travel times waveforms, phase arrivals. also incorporates shear anisotropy agrees published region. Other intend develop combined regional/global include former Soviet Union North America. Tomographic vastly improved through sources calibrated travel-time (i.e., reference events accurately known locations).
