摘要: Olfactory marker protein (OMP) is a 19-kD acidic found throughout the cytoplasm of mature olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs). Its function remains unknown. Following bulbectomy, proportion ORNs enough to express OMP declines greatly. However, in few remaining ORNs, it has been observed that intensity immunoreactivity (IR) appears increase over on unoperated side. We have now investigated this phenomenon quantitatively rats subjected unilateral bulbectomy. Results show at all postbulbectomy survival periods examined (3 days 6 months), significant decrease (19–37%) occurs transmission incident light through OMP(+)-ORNs bulbectomized versus epithelium (OE). Further, we also consistent side-to-side difference IR control animals. Possible explanations for these observations and their relation still unknown are discussed. To test possibility might serve mitogenic role OE, recombinant was added organotypic explant cultures fetal mucosa. Addition resulted dose-dependent density bromodeoxyuridine-positive cells cultures, with 50% occurring plateau concentration 25 nM. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Neurobiol 34: 377–390,
