The 'active' or dispersing morph of Callosobruchus maculatus, a pest stored cowpeas, is presumed to infest cowpea plants in the field prior harvest. In oviposition choice tests, both normal and active females preferred pods that were full-size but still green over younger, smaller older, mature pods. Exposed seeds usually intact all stages, although laid more eggs on than rough-coated one variety. Egg-to-adult survivorship was highest for directly seeds. On high mortality occurred because newly hatched larvae failed penetrate seed after they drilled through pod wall. However, since 20–50% do develop into adults, are susceptible C. maculatus well before dehisce expose preferences may be strongly influenced by surface texture potential sites.
