“Bitten By Shyness”: Menstrual Hygiene Management, Sanitation, and the Quest for Privacy in South Africa

摘要: Little is known about how menstruation managed in low-income settings and whether existing sanitation systems meet women's needs. Using the 'Photovoice' method with 21 women participatory workshops in-depth interviews, we collected data on menstrual hygiene management three sites Durban, South Africa. All reported using disposable sanitary pads. Although they were aware that pads nonbiodegradable, incompatible waterborne flush systems, fill up pit latrines, had little experience reusable products. Considerable energy was devoted to concealing containing 'menstrual waste,' expressed concern inadequate privacy during menstruation. lacked discreet disposal options reliable water access, while outdoor facilities considered unsafe. Findings highlight need for advocacy improve safety of this setting.
