摘要: A previously healthy 16-year-old boy presented to the Emergency Department with a 2-day history of hoarseness, sore throat, and chest tightness. The physical examination was significant for diffuse neck subcutaneous emphysema. computed tomography (CT) scan revealed pneumomediastinum after plain X-ray study failed uncover this finding. patient reported that 5 days before presentation he forcefully inhaled helium gas directly from multiple party balloons in an attempt alter his voice. fully recovered over next 2 days. Spontaneous developed no underlying lung disease, presumably air leakage secondary excessive elevation intra-thoracic pressure due repetitive inhalation gas. remains largely underdiagnosed clinically, especially young, patients.
