摘要: We demonstrate that commercially available germanium avalanche photodiodes can achieve single-photon sensitivity and subnanosecond time resolution at 77 K. Experiments show carrier trapping phenomena give the main contribution to detector noise. Therefore technological efforts will be welcome overcome present limitations are due material quality. These devices suitable for detection of short optical pulses in near-infrared range time-domain reflectometry characterization fibers with centimeter 1.3–1.5 μm. Further improvements timing performance obtained by device design.
