摘要: Effective ecological monitoring is imperative in a human-dominated world, as our ability to manage functioning ecosystems will depend on understanding biodiversity responses anthropogenic impacts. Yet, most efforts have either been narrowly focused particular sites, species and stressors — thus inadequately considering the cumulative effects of multiple, interacting impacts at scales management relevance or too unfocused provide specific guidance. We propose framework that integrates multi-scaled surveillance trends land cover with targeted evaluation hypothesized drivers change. The grounded flexible conceptual model uses generate test empirical models relate status diverse taxonomic groups nature extent human “footprint” other landscape attributes. An adaptive cycle standardized sampling, development, provides means learn about system guide management. Additional benefits include data trend for wide variety elements, spatially explicit regional planning scenario evaluation, identification knowledge gaps complementary research. describe implement Alberta, Canada, through Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute, identify key challenges be addressed.
