摘要: Regulations on the exploitation of populations commercially important fish species and ensuing consumer interest in sustainable products have increased need to accurately identify population origin products. Although genomics-based tools proven highly useful, there are relatively few examples marine displaying accurate assignment. We synthesize data for 156 single-nucleotide polymorphisms typed 1039 herring, Clupea harengus L., spanning Northeast Atlantic develop a tool that allows assignment individual herring their regional origin. show method's suitability address specific biological questions, as well management applications. analyse temporally replicated collections from two areas, Skagerrak (n = 81, 84, 66) western Baltic 52, 52). Both areas harbour heavily fished mixed-origin stocks, complicating issues. report novel genetic evidence Sea contribute catches North Sea, find support feeding aggregations mainly constitute with contributions Eastern Baltic. Our study describes general approach outlines database allowing traceability across large part its East distribution.
