摘要: Biomolecular assembly is a key driving force in nearly all life processes, providing structure, information storage, and communication within cells at the whole organism level. These processes rely on precise interactions between functional groups nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, small molecules, can be fine-tuned to span range of time, length, complexity scales. Recognizing power these motifs, researchers have sought emulate engineer biomolecular assemblies laboratory, with goals ranging from modulating cellular function creation new polymeric materials. In most cases, engineering efforts are inspired or informed by understanding structure properties naturally occurring assemblies, which has turn fueled development predictive models that enable computational design novel assemblies. This Review will focus selected examples protein highlighting story arc initial discovery an assembly, through attempts, toward ultimate goal design. The aim this highlight areas where significant progress been made, as well outline remaining challenges, solving challenges unlocks full biomolecules for advances technology medicine.
