Patterns and predictors of colorectal cancer test use in the adult U.S. population

摘要: BACKGROUND Screening is effective in reducing the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer. Rates cancer test use continue to be low. METHODS The authors analyzed data from National Health Interview Survey concerning home-administered fecal occult blood (FOBT) sigmoidoscopy/colonoscopy/proctoscopy estimate current rates identify factors associated with or nonuse tests. RESULTS In 2000, 17.1% respondents reported undergoing a home FOBT within past year, 33.9% an endoscopy previous 10 years, 42.5% either recommended time intervals. The tests varied by gender, race, ethnicity, age, education, income, health care coverage, having usual source care. Having seen physician year had strongest association use. Lack awareness lack recommendation were most commonly barriers such tests. CONCLUSIONS Less than half U.S. population age ≥ 50 years underwent Educational initiatives for patients providers regarding importance screening, efforts reduce disparities use, ensuring that all persons have access routine primary may help increase screening rates.
