Demoi -cracy: A Useful Framework for Theorizing the Democratization of Multilevel Governance?

摘要: The concept of demoi-cracy has gained prominence in democratic theory, especially applications to the European Union. This chapter explores whether it can inform scholarship on multilevel governance (MLG). starts by taking stock challenges that MLG implies for democracy. It then reviews theories assess how they address these challenges. discussion reveals ambiguities demoi-cratic theorizing, which are spelled out distinguishing four variants: (1) as consociationalism, (2) variable multilateralism, (3) network governance, and (4) multi-venue contestation. In principle, demoi-cracy—particularly its fourth understanding—has potential make a valuable contribution scholarship, highlighting embeddedness overlapping political communities providing normative guidelines reconciliation conflicting objectives. However, must be further specified, dialogue with approaches, allow this realized.
