摘要: The groundwater resources of the U.S. have been extensively contaminated by a wide variety organic pollutants. sorption-desorption process is one most important processes influencing contaminant movement in systems. Laboratory experiments were performed and mathematical models developed used to analyze sorption desorption hydrophobic solutes subsurface materials. work included consideration both single multisolute systems, while batch one-dimensional column reactor Mathematical model development batch, one-dimensional, two-dimensional for simulating multicomponent described nonlinear equilibrium expressions diffusional rate models. Petrov-Galerkin finite element methods accommodate sharp-front problems, rates simulated using method lines solution procedure. Numerical procedures also operator splitting parallel processing. A complete consistent set solid materials solute lindane 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. These reinforced findings that time scales equilibration are on order months, relationships nonlinear. Competition was not observed experiments, either with regard sorptionmore » or sorption. This lack competition did agree well predictions made ideal adsorbed theory. However, significant experiments. It concluded provide more sensitive indicator competitive than experiments.« less
