Geographic associations between lactase phenotype, multiple sclerosis, and inflammatory bowel diseases; Does obesity trump geography?

摘要: Geographic patterns with diminishing rates from north to south toward the equator have been described for a number of diseases, putatively related largely "western" lifestyle. Among these inflammatory bowel diseases; Crohn's (CD) and Ulcerative colitis (UC) prominent in sharing distributions autoimmune diseases. One interesting associations is epidemiologic similarity multiple sclerosis (MS). However, addition, at least some diseases also correlated inversely lactase non persistent population (LNP) distributions. It hypothesized that MS should an inverse relationship LNP. We provide support this by comparing published MS, CD, UC LNP national beginning new millennium. Possible links among may be evolutionary signature genes which accompanied emergence persistence millennia ago. The emergent phenotypic dichotomy forced different assimilation responses lactose digestion. While intestinal retention results direct host enzymatic digestion, persons bacterial metabolism impacts on micro-flora. These microbial changes play role altering including IBD MS. since late 20th century previously observed are changing.
