摘要: Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has emerged as a powerful tool for differentiation, identification and classification of microorganisms at the genus species levels. In this mini-review, we discuss challenges opportunities associated with application MALDI-TOF MS bacterial strain typing below level. Based on three examples important pathogens, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecium Bacillus cereus sensu lato explore strengths weaknesses technique. It was found that taxonomic resolution is limited which often prevents reliable categorization, or identification/typing. Only in selected cases were able to detect spectral biomarkers fingerprints allowed microbial differentiation. level requires rigorous standardization, high quality adequate sample-processing methods, spectra acquisition procedures, an optimized data analysis pipeline includes multivariate fingerprinting approaches. However, these conditions cannot be expected routine setting. Therefore, future efforts increase should involve alternative technologies, ideally combination sample pre-processing such separation techniques. hoped will open new avenues further improve MS-based technologies.
