摘要: Speed of movement is fundamental to animal behavior-defining the intensity a task, time needed complete it, and likelihood success-but how does an decide fast move? Most studies performance measure maximum capabilities, but animals rarely move at their in wild. It was goal our symposium develop conceptual framework explore choices speed nature. A major difference between approach previous work toward understanding optimal rather than maximal speeds. In following series papers, we provide starting point for future on speeds, including framework, simple optimality model, evolutionary context, exploration various biomechanical energetic constraints speed. By applying cross-disciplinary study choice speed-as have done here-we can reveal much about way use habitats, interact with conspecifics, avoid predators, obtain food, negotiate human-modified landscapes.
